Villa College, in collaboration with the High Commission of India in the Maldives, convened a commemorative symposium titled Bridges, Bytes and Blue Horizons: India-Maldives at 60 at the Ocean View Hall on 24 August 2026. Designed to examine bilateral relations through a structural and strategic lens, the forum gathered senior diplomats, policymakers, and academics to evaluate the multidimensional partnership between the two neighbouring states. By examining long-term developmental trajectories rather than transient news cycles, the session provided corporate and policy leaders with clear perspectives on regional stability, trade linkages, and cross-border cooperation.

The core deliberations centred on three distinct pillars that define modern bilateral engagement. The first pillar, designated as Bridges, explored how physical infrastructure, healthcare access, educational initiatives, and institutional links establish foundational trust. The second pillar, Bytes, analysed the integration of digital public infrastructure, fintech solutions, and modernised trade mechanisms, demonstrating how technological interoperability reinforces commercial resilience for businesses and communities alike. The final pillar, Blue Horizons, addressed shared ocean governance, maritime security protocols, and joint climate adaptation measures, highlighting the strategic imperatives of managing shared marine resources.

These strategic areas were examined during a panel discussion featuring distinguished panellists: His Excellency Shri G. Balasubramanian, High Commissioner of India to the Maldives; Dr Ibrahim Zuhuree, Additional Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maldives; Dr Aly Shameem, Assistant Professor at The Maldives National University; and Dr Mohammad Shekaib Alam, Assistant Professor at Villa College. Alongside the expert discourse, the symposium marked the formal inauguration of a thematic photo exhibition and a dedicated book donation session.
