Villa College recently marked a defining moment in Maldivian higher education by securing an overall five-star rating in the QS Stars university rating system. Announced during the VC Breakfast networking event on 13th July, this historic accolade distinguishes the college as the first and only institution in the Maldives to receive such international recognition. The milestone reflects a sustained institutional focus on academic rigour, operational transparency, and community engagement, validating the college as a leading educational provider on the global stage.
The QS Stars methodology provides a comprehensive evaluation of an institution, assessing performance across a wide range of indicators to deliver a complete overview of educational quality. In this rigorous audit, Villa College performed exceptionally well, earning the highest possible five stars in several critical categories, which include teaching, employability, online learning, global engagement, good governance, and environmental impact. Furthermore, the institution secured strong four-star ratings for academic development, diversity, equity and inclusion, alongside the programme strength of its Master of Business Administration.
Addressing the significance of this achievement during his welcome remarks, Vice Rector Dr Ali Najeeb reflected on the institutional journey, noting that the five-star rating from a trusted global authority confirms that the teaching standards and administrative framework of Villa College meet international benchmarks. He emphasised that this milestone represents a historic success for the wider higher education sector in the Maldives. Building upon this foundation, Dr Najeeb also introduced the upcoming Alumni Mentoring Initiative during the event. This programme aims to connect experienced industry professionals with recent graduates to cultivate essential leadership and soft skills, ensuring that students are fully prepared to navigate the complexities of the modern corporate environment.
A central theme of the networking event was the cultivation of a future-ready workforce to meet evolving industry demands. Guest speaker Dr Ashwin Fernandes, Chair of QS India, delivered a leadership talk focusing on how small nations can successfully cultivate global talent. Dr Fernandes commended the college on its achievement, noting that the QS Stars framework evaluates institutions comprehensively across numerous indicators to provide a complete picture of academic performance rather than relying on a single metric. He highlighted that this rating demonstrates how effectively Villa College connects the Maldives to the broader global academic community.
Institutional excellence requires a strong commitment to sustainable operations and inclusive governance, both of which were recognised in the audit. The QS report highlights significant achievements in maintaining a transparent administrative framework and ensuring high levels of internal staff engagement. In terms of environmental stewardship, the college has made substantial progress by incorporating renewable energy sources into its daily operations. Combined with a multicultural campus environment that actively supports diverse student demographics and international research partnerships, these operational metrics illustrate a holistic approach to institutional management.
The recognition from QS Stars validates the ongoing efforts of Villa College to elevate the standard of higher education in the Maldives. By combining robust academic frameworks with practical industry engagement and sustainable governance, the institution provides a nurturing environment for holistic student development. This milestone serves as both an objective endorsement of current practices and a solid foundation for future aspirations, ensuring that the college remains a vital contributor to the professional and socio-economic advancement of Maldives.
