Villa College LLB students to compete at the 23rd Willem C. Vis East International Commercial Arbitration Moot
3 min read

Villa College has confirmed the participation of a team of LLB students in the 23rd Willem C. Vis East International Commercial Arbitration Moot, one of the most recognised platforms for international commercial arbitration advocacy worldwide. The team, made up of Mariyam Yashau Khaleel, Aishath Thaima Thoha, and Michael Ali Musthafa, will represent both the institution and the Maldives in a competition that draws law students from across the globe.

The Willem C. Vis East Moot centres on complex problems in international commercial dispute resolution, requiring participants to demonstrate advanced research, written advocacy, and oral argumentation skills. For Villa College, fielding a team in this competition reflects a deliberate institutional strategy to move legal education beyond theoretical instruction and into direct engagement with global legal standards. The preparation process itself, which involves rigorous training in arbitration procedure and substantive commercial law, equips students with competencies that are difficult to replicate in a conventional classroom setting. This form of outbound student mobility serves as a practical bridge, connecting what students learn within their degree programme to the demands of professional legal practice at an international level.

The team's participation is sponsored by the Maldives Moot Court Society (MMCS), a collaboration that carries significance beyond logistical support. The partnership aligns with two of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals: SDG 4, which focuses on quality education, and SDG 17, which emphasises the importance of partnerships in achieving development objectives. By working alongside the MMCS, Villa College draws on external expertise and resources to provide its students with specialised training in advocacy and legal research. This kind of structured collaboration between an academic institution and a dedicated mooting body illustrates how targeted partnerships can expand the scope of what a college can offer its students, particularly in a small island developing state where access to international legal networks may otherwise be limited.

Participation in high-profile international mooting competitions has tangible implications for students entering the legal profession. Employers in the global legal market increasingly value candidates who can demonstrate practical exposure to cross-border commercial frameworks, and experience in a competition of this calibre provides verifiable evidence of such capability. For Villa College, the initiative also contributes to the institution's broader academic profile. Consistently supporting student participation in internationally recognised events signals to prospective students, partner institutions, and employers that the college is committed to producing graduates who are prepared to operate beyond national boundaries. The long-term effect is a strengthening of institutional credibility in both the regional and international higher education landscape.

Beyond the immediate benefits to the participating students, this initiative contributes to a broader objective: building a sustainable culture of mooting within the Maldivian legal community. International mooting competitions remain relatively new territory for Maldivian institutions, and each team that competes abroad helps to normalise this form of experiential legal education domestically. The knowledge and skills that Mariyam Yashau Khaleel, Aishath Thaima Thoha, and Michael Ali Musthafa bring back from the competition will inform future training efforts and may encourage subsequent cohorts of law students to pursue similar opportunities. In this respect, Villa College's participation serves a developmental function that extends well beyond the competition itself, contributing to the growth of professional legal standards across the country.

As the team prepares for the competition, Villa College extends its best wishes for their efforts on the global stage.
